Started making terrain for the French Indian Wars period, first up Snake Fences.
Woodland Indians making their way over a Snake Fence to attack Settlers. |
Finished fences, I decided to construct the snake fences with a thin base this would make them blend in better with the gaming table. |
I also made some shorter fences, they always come in handy. |
Materials needed for this project: large BBQ matches, box cutters, hobby knife and a hot glue gun. I cut off the red portion of the match and prepped some of the matches by scribing them with a hobby knife to give them a more realistic look. |
I used these mini icy pole sticks for my base. |
First step is to construct the prototype, arrange the icy pole sticks on a mat. |
Grab one of the end sticks and apply a thin layer of hot glue on top and secure one of the matches on the icy pole stick. |
Make sure you leave the match over hanging the icy pole stick, next step is to place a blob of hot glue on one of the ends. |
And fix it over the other icy pole stick. |
Do the same to the other end of the fence. |
Again apply a blob of hot glue on the tip of the match. |
And secure it over the other icy pole stick. |
Now apply a layer of hot glue as pictured in the image. |
Secure a match in place and then add 2 blobs of hot glue as in image. |
Fix another match. |
Create tiny bits of matches with box cutters. |
Place a blob of hot glue on the junction of the 2 matches and secure one of the tiny pieces of match on the glue this will create a platform for a long match to be placed on. |
Add another 2 blobs of hot glue and secure the long match, continue this process, in this image another small blob of hot glue in place near the hot glue gun. |
Add another small piece of match. |
repeat the procedure by adding glue and adding another long match. |
Continue this process till you build up the layers. |
Trim off the 2 end edges of the fence, make sure that you cut the match all in line with the base so that they will match up well with the other snake fences. |
image shows the evenly cut edges of the fence. |
All the other overhanging match can be trimmed at different lengths. |
You can add a bit of texture to the posts by scratching them with the point of a hobby knife. You can strengthen the fences by applying a thin layer of super glue over them. |
Mass of snake fences |
One you construct the first snake fence you can create a guide to speed up the assembling procedure of the base of the fence. Place the prototype fence on a piece of paper and create a outline of the fence with a pencil. |
Here is the guide. |
Image shows the starting point of creating a new fence by laying down the base and then starting to build up the structure. |
Primed fences with a can of black primer. |
Dry brush with VMC Flat Earth |
Add random dry brushing with VMC Green Grey |
Finish dry brushing with VMC Off White |
You can also place random patch of VMC Middlestone on the fence. |
Apply a layer of PVA glue on the base |
Add flock and the snake fences are ready for the gaming table. |
